Off the Wall: Decompose/Recompose 1993

"Marcia Pitch's work takes issue with hierarchical canons of taste and cultural legitimacy. Her readymade-framed images and her wall installation, both encrusted with lurid junk, place class culture in collision with itself. In these pieces, the pretentiousness of art confronts the flagrantly fake. Despite the playful and colorful demeanor, these assemblages present a considered inquiry into the relationship between consumer and popular culture and a questioning of the impact of both on the natural environment. Ironically, the materials she uses to create her images of decay and overgrowth are indestructible: Behind the benign face of domestic knick-knacks and toys, the permanence of the plastics is articulated as a threatening encroachment."

I see this series showing an unrestrained exuberance for life, while commenting on its' darker side. It is horror in plastic. I take something that appears ordinary and innocent and twist it. Though I am fascinated with the bizarre and explosive side of life, I hope to convey my optimism about personal, political and global issues by infusing vitality into the objects of refuse."
