Bite My Tongue: Art with Teeth 2001

Marcia Pitch, in her series, Bite My Tongue, juxtaposes aphorisms and proverbs with "found" objects to create fascinating collages of intellectual and compositional strength. In each work, Ms. Pitch addresses prickly, pervasive social issues, using magazine cutouts and three-dimensional pieces to develop a story that speaks to or resonates with the chosen aphoristic phrase or title. The true magnetic power of these pieces comes from their witty and ironic interplay between titles such as My lips are sealed, a slip of the tongue and shooting the breeze, and their vivid surrounding images.

Although the works are based on popular catch phrases, a concept that Ms. Pitch has not used before, they are unmistakably hers, as they exhibit her inspired color sense, joyous use of well-chosen images and gift for creating dramatic tension. Marcia Pitch, once again, has engaged her audience with intriguing, exquisitely rendered collages, alive with social commentary, trenchant wit and black humor.
